YES! honors Yolanda survivors and heroes in January issue
YES! Magazine ushers in the New Year with a super packed and star-studded January issue that features Angel Locsin and Marian Rivera on the cover as two of the biggest celebrity movers for survivors of killer typhoon Yolanda.
The cover story, titled “Still Standing: Yolanda Did Not Kill the Filipino Spirit,” focuses on people’s stories of heroism, humanity, and hope.
Marian and Angel have had their share of heroic acts.
Marian joined the Kapuso Adopt-a-Bangka Project, visited devastated areas in Cebu, and led relief operations with her boyfriend Dingdong Dantes.
Angel worked with the Philippine Red Cross, visited devastated areas in Iloilo, and auctioned off her Chevrolet Chevelle.
Other celebrities reached out to help: John Lloyd Cruz and Judy Ann Santos led their home network ABS-CBN’s benefit concert. Sarah Geronimo, another Kapamilya star, volunteered for the station’s telethon. Kris Aquino distributed goods in Iloilo. Piolo Pascual led a fun run. Julia Barretto set up a garage sale. Iza Calzado teamed up with SM Supermarket’s Biyayang Handog. Leyte Fourth District Rep. and TV host Lucy Torres-Gomez networked with U.S. Navy soldiers. Dingdong organized a relief drive in Estancia town in Iloilo. And a lot more!
Celebrities abroad did their part, too: The popular boy band One Direction joined fellow British stars—among them, Chef Jamie Oliver and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden—in a telethon. American Idol Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez, whose mother is Filipino, donated proceeds from the sales of her latest single, “Lead Me Home.” Fast & Furious star Paul Walker spent his last day on earth spearheading a charity event through his own Reach Out Worldwide. And many more!
The special report on Yolanda also features heartwarming stories of survival, rescue, and relief operations.
Sean Lastrilla, a 20-year-old native of Tacloban City in the Leyte province, was rescued through the valiant efforts of his mother and his half-sister. Brix Daelan Valle, a 13-year-old high school student from the Palo town, also in Leyte, considered it a miracle that he survived with his mother and their pet dog.
Relief came from various places and in different forms. Nations from Algeria to Vietnam sent assistance in cash, kind, and through manpower. International aid agencies mobilized teams to affected areas. Big companies showed that they have big hearts, too, by donating resources. Civic, charity, and volunteer groups lent a helping hand.
On the day the members of the Cagayan Valley Adventist Hospital Med Mission Team arrived from their base in Santiago City in the province of Isabela to the Tolosa town in Leyte, they unexpectedly had to deliver two baby boys.
“Symbols of hope” is how Dr. Alvin L. Reyes, one of the volunteer doctors, described those two babies. “It warms my heart that in any tragedy, sometimes not everything is lost.”
YES! Magazine’s January 2014 issue also showcases a collection of kiddie birthday parties threw by their famous parents.
